A New Year, An Evolving Blog
Each year I reevaluate my blog. It could use a little more structure. A bit more focus. I have a couple tweaks in store for 2010, but I like its flexibility. One tradition I'm going to keep is dedicating one day a month to a book pick. Last year it was the 4th day of each month. This year it'll be the first Monday of each month (and how fitting that today happens to be the 4th). So on that note . . .
If you haven't read Baby Catcher by Peggy Vincent, you must. She is a hoot. She writes about a series of homebirths told by her perspective as a midwife. Mixed in with the births is Peggy's story of how she became a midwife in the first place and how the law and the insurance companies eventually stopped her work. Homebirths sound amazing. Families gather together and when the baby arrives, they throw a big party. Still, I'm not sure I could pull it off. When I gave "birth" to a weeks old fetus during my miscarriage, I remember thinking, I want painkillers! Maybe if someone like Peggy was my midwife I'd reconsider. Anyway, the book came out in 2002, so it's not a new release, but can be easily ordered online.

I read it when recently pregnant, and loved it. The only negative was having some of the scary stories floating around in my head pre-birth. But I loved her story. I recently saw Ricki Lake's documentary, The Business of Being Born and thought it was very good. Had I seen it pre-kids, I may have opted for a home birth.
I still remember your essay on Mothering.com about your miscarriage. It was so touching.

What a beautiful cover for a book.
I still can't read about births after the trauma I experienced delivering my kid(s).

I have a love-hate relationship with books about birth. On one hand, I love them. On the other hand, they freak me out and make me scared to have children.
