Hope is a Good Thing
What’s up doc?
Do you think when I switched careers I should’ve become a therapist instead of a writer?
This is me sitting in my mom’s “chair.” She’s a therapist in Nashville and is about to open her own practice in addition to working at the clinic where she is now. I’m so proud. There is nothing as rewarding as running your own biz.But yeah, I think I’ll leave that job with her and stick to pen and paper. Speaking of being an entrepreneur (can I use that term to apply to being a freelancer, or are the two different?), I found out today that an article of mine that was slated to come out in September – an article I was so excited about – was just pushed to March. I actually dreamed of this very thing happening and brushed off my dream as silly. After all, the final pages were already sent to the printer. I allowed myself to be sad for about two minutes, then set my disappointment aside, drove home, and kept pushing forward. This is the life of a freelancer. Articles get canceled and postponed and have to be rewritten. Editors leave. Magazines fold. But I love what I do. So I keep writing and continue to send in submissions and work on revisions and build my patience. And I never give up hope. Or faith. Hope and faith keep me going. So when March rolls around, check back for that article of mine.
P.S. Name the movie where one of the character’s lines is the title of this post.

You are adorable Ms. Jenny Rough. Cute photo!
And congrats to your mom on her new practice!
Sorry about the delay with your piece!

Listen to your dreams, girl! You're in tune.
Trying to keep the faith myself, I just created a To Do list tab on my submissions spreadsheet that has in bright letters on top, "Do Not Give Up." It's a good reminder. Daily.
Sorry to hear your article was postponed, but who knows. Maybe March will be the month that some important editor happens to pick up that magazine, and the rest is history. Looking forward to reading it.

I like that, Kristy. You never know . . .

You have such an amazing attitude! I'm trying to cultivate something similar. Hopefully I get a handle on it soon! ;)

Shawshank Redemption?

Can't for the life of me think of the movie! But I feel like I know it, you know that feeling?
You are just adorable!
Congrats to your mom!
And, I will look forward to the article next March.
Reminds me of waiting until March for Anne Lamott's last book entitled, Grace. I kept March in the forefront of my mind for many months waiting!
Now, I will wait for your article!
12:10 AM
Yes, Shawshank. Such a good movie.
Well, La La, this article isn't quite as exciting as Anne Lamott's Grace, but thanks for being excited.

Great post, Jenny--I love coming back here.

Don't you just hate when that happens? Let us know when your article finally goes live.
Congrats to your mom. That's gotta be an exciting rush!
Can't help you with the name of the movie, though. Totally clueless.

Darn tootin' you're an entrepreneur! And a good one, at that!

Oh, I don't know. I really LIKE your writing. You make it look so easy (Annie does that, too), and I KNOW it's not easy. So, waiting for yours (like waiting for hers) is fun!
11:31 PM
Well that's very inspirational, thank you.
Best wishes

I agree with Carrie. Successful freelancers have that entrepreneurial spirit. That's why I love interviewing entrepreneurs and getting their tips on building a business, creating work/life balance, etc. Sorry to hear that your article is delayed!
6:22 PM
Shawshank Redemption.
