On the Hunt

My mom and I are on the hunt for a page-turner.

Not a good book.

Or a book you can't put down...once you finally get into it (ya know, after 120 pages or so).

But a book that grabs you from the first sentence and consumes your life for the next 24-48 hours.

Any ideas?

You read my mind-- or I read yours! I can't wait to see some recommendations. I'm in a drought too...

This is an oldie, but I just read The Chronicles of Narnia series for the first time...I feel like I've been captured by these books...incredible.

Try Meg Cabot's adult books "Every Boy's Got One" or "The Boy Next Door." There's another one, but the name escapes me. They are told entirely in e-mail, journal, and blackberry message. It's a unique concept and will have you completely hooked!

For more literary tastes, try "My Sister's Keeper. by Jodi Piccoult. It is simply the most riveting book I've EVER read.

My sister in law loves Meg Cabot...maybe I'll give that a try.

Our book club read My Sister's Keeper a few years ago. It was one of the only books all four of us finished - a major feat for us!

I sat in Borders yesterday and read a whole book, because I couldn't put it down. (and I didn't think I could find quiet at home). I did buy it! lol

It was Flower Children. But...I don't know if it is a "page turner". Just really spoke to me.

The last time I think I could call a book a page turner, it was The Other Boleyn Girl, by Philippa Gregory.

:)

From what I can see on Amazon, Flower Children looks great. I'll have to check it out. Thanks, Amber!

Jenny, have you read Middlesex? It's different but very good. I couldn't put it down.

Augusta, Gone, now reserved at my library! Thanks for the recommendation. I think we are on the same wavelength.

Two more: Good Grief, The Memory of Running.

Happy reading.

OH my. I have one. Mr. Pip, by Lloyd Jones. He writes with truth, courage, fear, and heart. You can't stop reading it -- even when it's painful -- because he opens you to a world, a mind of thoughts.

Completely captivating.

Now that I'm through that, I'll go through this list to find some more great reads.

You've probably already read these, but the classics, "East of Eden" and "Good Earth" were ones that kept me hooked. "The Bonesetter's Daughter" by Amy Tan was another of my favorites as well as "Map of Love" by Adaff Soueff (sp?).

It's fun to read what others are suggesting too!

The Outlander series by Diana Gabaldon. A mix of time travel/historical fiction/romance novels. The first book is called Outlander. A woman from the 1940's goes back in time to the 1700's in Scotland.

Another favourite is A Tree Grows in Brooklyn by Betty Smith. A book my husband's grandmother calls "the sweetest story ever told."

There was a huge craze in my husband's office not that long ago over The Outlander series...

A Tree Grows in Brooklyn has been on my must reads forever...maybe it's time to finally read it.

Carissa, I skimmed Middlesex. And Jill, thanks for the two other recs. Trish and GOG, I'm not ignoring you, but I've read 'em. Good books!

I second the "East of Eden" rec - amazing and beautiful recasting of the book of Genesis.

My latest favorite is "Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close" by Jonathan Safran Foer -- a story of family history, tragedy, and hope told from the perspective of a charming ten-year old boy.

Happy reading!

Invisible Monsters by Chuck Pahalniuk (he wrote Fight Club) is the best pageturner I've ever read - everyone I've recommended it to has finished it in less than a day. So beware :) I also highly recommend The Prodigal Summer by Barbara Kingsolver and anything by Wally Lamb (but especially She's Come Undone).

I love all these books to look into now!

As for me, I LOVE all Jodi Picoult's books (reading 19 Minutes right now), JK Rowling for Harry Potter- can't put those down at all, love Janet Evanovich's Stephanie Plum series for light hearted, fun reading, and I'll keep thinking...

Okay, just finished August Gone. So so good, but it's killing me that I can't find any updated info on her daughter now...like is she okay, did she get it together? Great recommendations though. Thanks.

I know, isn't that agonizing? I liked Come Back...and checked out the mother/daughter website after I read the book.
