The Miracle of Life

Last month at the BlogHer conference I heard Elizabeth Edwards speak (yep, she’s a blogger).

(For more of my thoughts on the conference, see my latest “
Ask a Blogger” column.)

EE said she didn’t believe in an intervening God.

I do.

I was on the phone with my mom last Friday. She lives in Nashville and said it hadn’t rained there in ages. The 100 degree weather and the drought were taking a toll on the land and the people of the city. She heard a
TV spot by the Christian music artist Michael W Smith who reminded people that in biblical times, people prayed for rain. He petitioned the people of Nashville to take a day of prayer. A direct request to the creator of the universe.

She said, “After hearing that, I’ve been praying for rain non-stop.”

As we talked, she was leaving a bookstore. On her way to the car she picked up her pace because it started to sprinkle. Soon she was running because it began to pour.

Slowly but surely, I’ve been asking those who believe in an intervening God to pray for me and Ron. We hope/desire to have a baby.

I can track days and schedule rendezvous and receive acupuncture treatments and drink herbal medicines, but (as Ron likes to say), "There’s a reason it’s called the miracle of life."

We will remain faithful either way.

Wow - what a powerful reminder. I do believe in an intervening God but I often forget to do my part and ask!

We threw up a quick prayer Monday night for Brad who had to speak in front of 2,000 teachers yesterday. He came home and told us how great it went and I instantly thought - "That was you God, not Brad. Thanks."

I will commit to praying daily for you guys - I'll put a post-it on the computer to remind me - and we will ask God to work in his timing but ask that it would be soon.

Thanks for asking us to pray - it's an honor to share in the process.

Thanks, Kim! It's so easy to get discouraged.

God's timing...but soon! I love that :-)

I love how you weave your faith in your writing. Kind of like how you weave your faith in your life, I'm guessing.

It's like the Secret. Ask for what you want. It will happen. Maybe not how and when you want. but it'll happen.

Jenny,
I believe in the power of prayer, but I also believe that sometimes we just don't understand God's plan for us. Hopefully your hopes and God's plans will meet very soon.

Also had to tell you that your talk of an interventionist God made me think of Nick Cave's "Into My Arms" - I have had it in my head for 2 days now and highly recommend you listen to it. So sweet.

I'm with ya Danielle...and that's probably one of the hardest things about this whole issue. That God may have very different plans. We're trying to remain open-hearted!

Okay, I'll check out Ito My Arms...thank you!

Hey, I use to live in Nashville. Worked at Opryland, before they tore it down and it became a shopping mall (Opry Mills).

Anyway, things in my life always turn out for the best when I surrender and turn them over to God. Totally put them in his hands and it always works out the way it should. I will continue to keep you and your husband in my prayers. You will be a wonderful mommy. Believe!!

You have my prayers. Just curious, have you picked up a book on feng shui, that has a fertility section? It's not just hocus-pocus stuff, it's more about how your subconscious works. Like, if you have lots of pictures of couples around in your house, it's a good idea to add some of children as well.
Try to stay relaxed -- I know you are a cool, calm, savvy woman -- but just stay that way. It helps.

I will pray for you, Jenny.

I won't say I know how you feel, but I remember how it felt to hope and pray and wait for a child.

My prayers were answered, but not in the ways I pictured. My children found their ways to me through adoption. I know they were meant to be mine and I theirs always. I'm not saying that adoption is the answer for you, only that you're living your way into your answer, and that's easier with an open heart.

Yes, I will pray for you, for the baby you hope for and desire. I will pray in thanksgiving for the answer that's unfolding. I will pray that God's rain fall upon you, quench your thirst, and give you peace.

Blessings to you, Jenny. All blessings to you.
