Acupuncture: No Pain, No Gain

I’m at the doctor’s office today, very un-pregnant, when the doctor tells me to give it a few more months. I’m still healing from the surgery (which went very well) and he convinces me I don’t need to resort to the turkey baster method…yet. I ask him about alternative therapy and he’s all for it. He takes a prescription pad and scribbles down the name and location of an acupuncturist who can help with my endometriosis.

Here’s the thing. I write about alternative therapy. I blog about yoga and healthy eating
over here, and I’m completely on board with massage, breath work, herbal teas, etc. . . but I draw the line at needles. There’s something about the idea of lots of tiny needles being inserted into my body that doesn’t sit well with me (I've heard that it does hurt, not to mention that two women told me acupuncture made their periods longer and heavier…the last thing I need!)

Later, I’m having lunch with my friend Elizabeth, and I run the acupuncture idea by her. She’s also squeamish about needles.

“I’ll go with you,” she says.

“Really?” I say. “You’ll go with me to my acupuncture appointment?”

She nods. We are both eating Chicken Tikka Masala at an Indian restaurant in Georgetown, and I scoop up a forkful of rice. But I hesitate before putting it in my mouth.

“You’ll hold my hand?” I ask.

“Yes,” she says.

“And you won’t freak out if I cry?” I say.

“I won’t,” she says.

Although it does dawn on us that she might pass out when she actually sees the needles. Still, I’d rather be there with her than alone with the practitioner.

But needles? I don’t know.

I don’t know. I don’t know. I don’t know.

“You can write about it,” Elizabeth says.

Oh, fine. I’ll call the guy tomorrow
.

Jenny,

Just getting all caught up on your blog. There is a shift happening within you, I can feel it in your words. That is breaking up old ways and making room for the new. Brighter days are ahead!

I'll be there with you in spirit, if that helps. The needles are sheathed until they actually are set into your skin so Elizabeth won't have to see them going in.

It's actually a very gentle, healing process. If you do decide to go, I'll send you light and love from the West Coast.

Consider it a sacrifice for your career as well as a potential healing for your body. Surely there's a good article just waiting to be written from the experience. :)

Hi Jenny,
Acupuncture has been a very profound experience for my teenage son who has a nuisance of a vocal tic. He had such success, I was moved to try it myself just to see what would happen..

I did have an early, and heavier period as well, but have found the experience, three times now, to be very soothing and revitalizing. It really doesn't hurt. Once in a while one of them will irritate, but it's trivial, and really connects mind and body. Good luck!

I have been away for a looong time, so am not caught up on your blog other than this post, but glad to see you are still here and hoping to get some catching up done. Wishing you well!

All of us have had acupuncture. No pain. Most of the time, I never even felt the needle going in. Though I could feel what it was stimulating in my body. That was a little weird and very cool.

If your acupuncturist is good, it shouldn't hurt.

Good luck!

Perfect timing...can you be my test...tell me how it goes. I have been meaning to go too for a problem I am having. Everyone says acupuncture will help...but I faint at the site of needles! So ...do write about it and let me know how it goes.

Also- I know many women who couldn't get pregnant until they started seeing an acupuncturist!! I think it is a great idea! What a good friend to go with you too!

I tried it when I was pregnant and swollen up with fluid like a balloon. It didn't hurt at all, (but it didn't help either).
