Things to Do Post-Op

1. Finish the stack of partly-read books by your bed

2. Give up (there’s a reason you only made it halfway through the first time)

3. Watch the three hour version of Gandhi

4. Spend the next three hours contemplating the morality of hunger strikes

5. Lay on your back and try to will the dog to make you tea with honey and lemon

6. Lay on your back and try to will your husband to walk in the door with a gift (he brought flowers)

7. Try to figure out a way to scratch your itchy, healing scars without actually touching them

9. Try not to burp, hiccup, sneeze, cough or laugh (ouch)

10. Decide you have too much “stuff” in your house and begin making a list of all the things to donate or sell

Any other ideas? I still have another week of recovery…

I was going to recommend the DVDs from either the Gilmore Girls or the West Wing, but I think they'd make you laugh, so that's no good (maybe next week?)

My Dad discovered that after his surgery he couldn't read or watch anything that involved blows to the stomach. He started reading romance novels because he needed a regular dose of happy endings :)

I watched Ghandi and was suprised at how great it was. Watch it!

Oh that's easy... count the spiderwebs overhead! :) Living in an old farm house with oddly high ceilings, they can build them faster than I can sweep them down.

If I only halfway make it through a book, I won't try again. It goes back to the library.

Keeping a notebook handy for any article topics to write.

Do crossword puzzles or something similiar.

Look out the window and watch the clouds change shapes.

Listen to nature. Watch the shadowy shapes the leaves make.

Well, I tried. :)

Sudoku puzzles are actually quite addictive, my hubby learned while he was recovering.

He also loved listening to books on tape - much easier than tackling that stack of books next to the bed.

Mmm, take up crocheting? Or not.

Glad to hear things are going so well you're already getting bored.

If you have to cough, sneeze, etc. hold that pillow tight on your belly first, it does help.
Look at pictures, and write on the back, so you don't get backlogged, like me.
re-connect with old friends, the old way, pen and paper! Say what you always wanted to say or what they have meant to you.
SLEEP,SLEEP,SLEEP!!
Get the magazines you would never buy or have time to read. Take less brain power.
and the #1 thing to do while recovering form surgery, in bed....
surround yourself with comfort, fluffy pillow, million thread count sheets, fresh flowers in the room, fresh fruit baskets, candles, nice lotions, just all the spa like stuff. YOU DESERVE IT. Don't even need to say jounal cause I know you are doing that.

FEEL BETTER, DON'T OVERDO IT!
TAKE THE PAIN MEDS.
XOXO

Jenny, I thought of one more suggestion: Scrapbooking.

While on bedrest for five weeks I:
1) taught myself to crochet
2) watched the entire channel four line-up: Today show, local news, Ellen, The Starting Over House (since defunct), soaps until 3:00, Dr. Phil. Pathetic eh?
3) Talked incessantly on the phone to whoever would listen
4) Made a list of all the things I'd do once I was out of the bed
5) Received visitors who brought me various types of coffees in disposable cups :)

Hang in there!

I plan out my gardens... what I would have with unlimited time and unlimited funds. I'd have a hummingbird garden in the corner by the basement door, a vegetable garden in the patch out back complete with pumpkins and zucchini (I hate zucchini). Of course, if you don't have a plot of land for a garden, container gardens are great fun, too! Ever consider a self-contained water garden for your balcony?
