"No" is the New "Yes"

I love my little writers’ group. Here's what we discussed last meeting:

Amy: I got another rejection from S___ magazine, but now we have a dialogue going on.

Jenny: Good, good.

Scott: You should write an article about getting rejected from S___ magazine. Talk about what that does for your self-esteem.

Amy: Scott, Scott, Scott, “No” is the new “Yes.”

Jenny: It’s true!

Melanie: It’s an invitation to . . .

Amy: . . . continue the dialogue. Okay, editor, you hated that idea and the five previous ones, but how about this one? Every time she says, “No,” I think, “Okay, no - but yes!”

Rina: "No" is the new "Yes." I like that.

Reminds me of a conversation my kids had.

K-(potential sales person who doesn't want to take "no" for an answer)-Mommy always says no! Hey, J-what if no means yes and yes means no?

J-(logically)-Then we'd be hearing a lot of "yeses."

The new assertive way to get your foot in the door. The editor or whoever accepts articles would at least know you are trying. Cool. It's so easy to give up when you get rejected.

Haha, sometimes I feel like it's a rite of passage to get rejected from S___ or X____ magazine. At least we can commiserate.

I've gotten some yeses after repeated no's but the unfortunate thing is that sometimes editors just stop responding after one or two no's.

I don't have a writer's group (I one of those lone writer types), but I love the rapport you guys have! I have a feeling you guys would rock in a round of Pictionary ... ;-)

Have a great weekend, Jenny!

This sounds like my writer's group! We're always trying to make bad news sound like good news, and good news sound like great news! Amazingly, it's a strategy that's worked. Two years ago, almost none of us had gigs. Now, four of the six of us have books in the works, are working at magazines, are writing documentaries, etc. etc. Ah, the power of the group to transform no into yes!
