Mmm...Mmm...Good
Me: Should I make a peanut better and jelly sandwich or a cream cheese and jelly sandwich?
Ron: Should I eat a lemon Clif bar or a black cherry almond Clif bar?
Ah, yes.
Dinnertime decisions at the Rough household.
But not anymore! Thanks to Fully Caffeinated, we are turning over a new leaf. Ron has signed on to cook two nights every week, I get two different nights, one night is leftovers, and the remaining two nights we eat out.
So this evening was Ron’s first experiment. As he sorted through our pots and pans I settled onto the couch with a glass of red wine and my new Anne Lamott book.
Here are the sounds I heard coming from the kitchen:
Clatter, boom, bang.
“Oh, sh—"
Clatter, BAM!
“OW!”
Beep beep boop. “Hello, Mom?”
Then the smells wafted into the living room. And it smelled…good. Darn good.
Tasted good too. He made jambalaya.
I’ve mentioned before how I don't like to cook. But Thursday is my assigned night, and you can bet I’ve never been so motivated to whip up a tasty dish in my life...

I hate to cook, too. Maybe it's not so much the cooking as it is the cleaning up afterwards I hate more. No, I hate cooking. The less time it takes to whip up something, the better.
I like it when I can just make easy sandwiches-along with the easy clean up. No dishes except maybe a butter knife.
I would rather do dishes than cook. Today was a nice treat. My oldest cooked. I did dishes. No whining to be had by either of us. (She'd whine about doing dishes.)I wouldn't mind it if she took over the cooking.
I don't see my husband taking turns doing the cooking. If he used the outdoor grill to grill some meat, I would still have to get vegetables ready. Can't win.

Great solution! My husband is an amazing cook... better than amazing! Me...not so much. He cooked for years, romantic candlelight dinners once the babies were in bed. Then the little devils grew up and dinner took on a different flavor all together. Sippy cups, spills and meatloaf! I cooked. For years.
Now they are teenagers so dinner has evolved again...they like Dad's cooking. This year I gave it up. It's whatever dad makes or grilled cheese (my husband cannot, will not eat grilled cheese for dinner)
He's not only cooking, but cleaning up while I wrestle with homework and bedtime for my little one. Totally working for me but he's getting frustrated.
Designated chefs! Great plan..thanks.

When it's my night to cook, I make breaded chicken. It's super easy! Crush a bunch of saltines (corn flakes work too, but I tihnk saltines make the chicken juicier) with a rolling pin, throw in some oregano and basil. When it's just right, rinse a chicken breast in egg, roll it in the saltine/spice crumb mixture, and cook at 400 degrees for 20 to 30 minutes (depending on the size of the breast). You're done! YUM.

Your idea of dinner sounds quite a bit like mine! I've decided to turn over a new leaf, though (hmm...I wonder what provided this motivation?).
I like your idea of having specific days where you're responsible for making a meal. Even though I'm single and would be doing it on my own, I think the motivation will be easier if I set aside at least one specific day where I'd have to go out of my way to make something. Good idea! :)

I LOVE it when people take my advice! Take an A!

BTW - how's the new Anne Lamott book?
10:30 PM
The new Anne Lamott book is GREAT. But I realized that I've already read most of the essays due to the fact that I'm a total stalker of her writing and had already tracked them down long ago in O mag, West mag, Salon.com, etc.

That's hilarious! You can great recipes on the foodnetwork website, and try Rachel Ray. Is that her name? Good luck!

Ooohh - I just started "Plan B" yesterday. I didn't realize she had a newer one! Good luck with the dinner thing. I've found great recipes through the Kraft Foods magazine. If you go to their website you can sign up to get it in the mail. Of course they try to push their products, but the recipes always seem really easy and my family usually really likes them!

If you find any great and really easy recipes, please post them! I need help.
