The Name Game
Me: What about Sienna?
Him: As in the minivan?
Me: As in a name for our baby.
Him: I don’t think so.
Me: Why not?
Him: Sienna minute? Sienna little while?
Me: Hmm…Jane?
Him: Me Tarzan, you Jane.
Me: Lizzy?
Him:
Lizzy Borden took an ax
And gave her mother forty whacks.
When she saw what she had done,
She gave her father forty-one.
Me: Oh, fine. You think of a girl name.
Him:
Me: Should I ask the blogosphere?
Him: How about Blog?
Me: Blog?
Him: We could call her Bloggy.
Me: The best you can come up with is Bloggy (or Zen)?
Him: Tofu?
Me: I suppose it's better than the name my brother came up with.
Him: What was that?
Me: Mytoiletpaper Iz.
Clearly we need help here. We thought of a boy name we both love in two seconds. But we’re taking suggestions if it’s a girl.
P.S. Speaking of names, my mom doesn't want to be called grandma. So...what else do kids call their grandparents?

I never faced that problem. Everyone accepted being called Grandma. I heard of Nana.
There are so many girl's names. I always liked Jordynne. I never got to name my girls that. Read "100 Things About Me" on my other blog: http://thedailythree.blogspot.com/.
My sister named her girls Nakeeta (i.e., Nikita) and Sierra (truck, mountains).
Brianna. Bailey. Emma.
I remember the frustrations of argreeing on names. You got plenty of time. With my second child, I couldn't decide on Morgan, Taylor, Rhylee, or Kourtni. So, I combined it "Kourtni Rhylee" for other reasons. (After Kourtni was born, I saw "Sheridan" and told my husband about that because his name is Dan; it would have been a merger of both our names. (I am glad that we never did see that before she was born. It would have confused me.)
Thanks for sharing.

My brother and his wife took a bunch of letters and kind of squished them together into a name...turned out pretty well. Perhaps you should get some of those alphabet magnets, put them on the fridge, and wait for inspiration to strike!?!
As for what to call Grandma, how about, "That nice lady who brings me presents"???
Enjoy your fun dilemmas!

My friend's baby calls her gramma GiGi (for "gorgeous grandma").
She calls her other gramma "Grancy" because her gramma's name is Nancy.

as far as names go for children, i am a big fan of naming them after someone you admire so that there is a history to the name. All of my children for at least one of there names (mine all have middle names) are named after special family memebers. For the grandma thing, my older brothers kids called my mom Nana and my Dad PopPop, my oldest sister's kidscalled them Mommom and Poppop. Personally I preferred Grandma and Grandpa so that is what my kids called them. My Grandson however has 2 sets of grandparents and 4sets of great grandparents. Megan wanted Dale to call Jim and I something different, So she ended up with Grammie and Grampy only Grampy has now formaly been changed to Grumpy. One other grand ma is named GG. You could always check different languages to see if the word for grandma is more fun. Good luck!

We like Ryan for a girl
We use Nana and poppop.
My sis-in-law uses GaGa
I have heard lots o' things. Gram, (we use GramMarie and Daddy Bill for my grands, the kids great grands), Dutchess, Aunt _____ (insert name here).
So whatever the grandparent wants - or you want!

I love Ryan for a girl. I think Ryan Rough sounds good. Ron's not real big on the gender neutral name -- so I'm saving my big push (no pun intended) for it until I'm in labor. Hee hee.

I love Camden , Peyton or Mia for a girl.
The kid will probably decide what to call Gramma anyway, so I wouldnt' worry about that.

I had a student once named Bert James Head. His parents nicknamed him BJ early in life. He will probably never get laid in his life.
When I was born, my mom wanted to name me Meghan. My dad said it sounded too much like "Makin' Bacon"
They named me Heather, because he could already spell weather and feather. My middle name is Naomi - the name of my mother's Great Dane that died just before I was born.
The point: No matter what you name your child, someone will find a way to make fun of the name. Choose what's easiest to shout in anger. :)

I still like "Mytoiletpaper Iz" or "Whenthegoing Getz" or "Ihitmyball Inthe."

This is all way too exciting!
My grandparents went by Gram and Papa (emphasis on second syllablein Papa) which I always liked.
As for girl names, I tend to agree with the comment about choosing a name in honor of someone (or a first letter or middle name). I personally love the more traditional feminine names like Olivia, Jacqueline, Juliana, etc. but your gender neutral ones are quite charming too.
Happy brainstorming!

Todd says, Mick.
As in, the crime dog.

I love Papa. I tried to talk Ron into having our kid call him that instead of Dad and he was like, Not unless we move to Portugal!
9:58 PM
We used to call my paternal grandmother "Grammy" so that my parents would know which one we were talking about. It suited her warm, cuddly demeanor. My maternal grandmother is very formal, so it was always "Grandmother, please pass the bread basket."
10:21 PM
Jane is the best girl name in the whole world, but Jane Link sounded too much like a fence, so we couldn't use it. YOU could/should!
We like "Grammy" for Grandma, and Papa for Grandpa.
P.S. If you were trying to get pregnant, I can almost guarantee you are going to have a girl. Tell Ron if it's a girl, you get to choose the name, if it's a boy.... Or, let him pick the middle name for the girl.
10:40 PM
I think Renee Rough sounds fab!!
5:57 PM
My kids call my mom Gram. You may want to wait, though, and let your baby choose his/her own name to call her. It will probably inspire a better name and a better story that way. My best friend's kids call her mom Mudgie (it's a complicated story) and it's perfect for her. She loves it, and now my kids call her that, too!
10:36 PM
My kids call one grandma "Nana" and the other Grandma. Both Grandpas are "Grandpa" but we do have lots of "Which Grandpa?" when we're talking about them.
Picking names is especially tough being married to a teacher. Every name I suggested had a bad memory for Brad. Some of our favorite girl names were Natalie (that's our daughter's name), Melanie, Lillian, Naomi, Ruth, Grace and Molly. Brad has lots of kids coming through his classes with the very "creative" names that are unconventional. They are interesting, but I always remember as a kid being discouraged when I couldn't find barrettes or little metal license plates that didn't say "Kimberly" and only said "Kim". I think it's easier for kids now than it used to be to have unusual names.

Wow. You've got a lot of opinionated bloggy friends.
