What Do Owls Eat?

5:00am

BA! BAN-A! BA! BA! BA!

My alarm clock. It plays a little song.

I slide out of the soft sheets. In the bathroom, I wash my face, put in contacts, brush my teeth.

By 5:15am I’m out the door.

The freeway is packed. Starbucks is buzzing. The path along the Potomac is full of runners, jogging in the dark and the pouring rain.

What species are you people and what planet do you come from?

I know – you are my husband. And my mom and dad. You are my writing friend, my book club friend, and my law school friend. Actually, come to think of it, most people I know are morning people.

Not me.

But this week is different. I pledged to be an early bird for five days. Anyone can do anything for five days, right? I saw a woman sculling along the Potomac a few weeks ago and thought: “Wow, she looks so peaceful. So graceful. So pretty and relaxed. I want to be her!”

To learn to scull, I was told I had to be at the boathouse before sun-up. So here I am. I stand, shivering, dripping, and yawning. I feel grimy and cranky and the water smells like rotten fish. I think: “There is nothing pretty about this picture.”

The instructor puts us in simulators on the land. Tomorrow will be our BIG day: permission to take gigantic yellow boats with big yellow oars in the water – boats that scream BEGINNER!

Tomorrow? Four more days of this?

BA! BAN-A! B—

I hit the off button and roll over, burying myself deep within the warm, soft sheets. No worm for me. My days – er, I mean my day – of being a morning person? Over!

Oh, Michelle -- you and my husband both! I'm switching to a evening class. 5:30. As in, PM. Unless you want my morning slot?

P.S. Carrie - I haven't heard Ha, ha, ha, PLOP since I was a little kid. Too funny.

Morning person I am not!!! I like to sleep 'till..well...7:30am would be great. But I would prefer 8:30am. But with my kids early means 6:15 am.

YUCK!

4:00 am is the best time to write, dream, run, and read!
You are right...I think we are a different species! Nightime is when I can no longer put two thoughts together! I am married to a night owl and I love love love my 5:00 am mornings...you all are for sure a different breed then us morning early birds :)

Thanks for this...I was giggling.

5:30PM to 9:00 PM is the best time of the day. Especially in the summer when you have that soft light where there is no glaring brightness of the sun, but it's even bright in the shade, if that makes any sense. The only thing left is dinner with family (or alone, when I lived alone dinner was my favorite meal). Second to that, in college I used to love the time slot from 2:00AM to 4:00 AM (bedtime) everything was dead quiet and i felt like the only person in the world awake.

But yeah, you at 5:00 AM? wtf were you thinking?

Sidenote - you can really judge your life by Yahoo Fantasy Sports. If transactions and scoring of the previous day have been completed, you stayed up too late. If they haven't, you are up too early.

I'm with you girlfriend. 5:30 am in the cold beside some water, exercising? Forget it. I'd rather meditating in my warm house -quiet and relaxing. No smell of fish there!

I'm with you Jenny, let those morning birds get the worm. We night owls can just slip into the night with a nice glass of vino.
