Leave It to Oprah
I thought of a brilliant idea for an article: Live to 100. Actually, I stole the idea from an old lady -- a health expert who spoke to my husband's office as a part of their wellness program. She said humans can live to be 120.
I pitched the idea to a magazine. Reject.
Pitched again. Reject.
If you're a writer, you know the drill.
Then I received my October issue of O, The Oprah Magazine in the mail. The topic? Aging.
"Shoot," I said, thumbing through the book. "I should've pitched The Opsters."
I began reading the articles page by page.
"Darn," I said. "Live to 100 would be perfect for this issue."
Then -- near the end of the publication -- I stumbled across an article: Live to 1000.
Clearly I'm not thinking big enough.

Too funny Jenny! That just proves you are thinking along the lines of really big magazine writer thinkers! Your on the pulse!
Aren't you cool?

You're getting funnier, Jenny, that ought to count for something!

So the lesson is: when you get a rejection of your idea, increase it's scope until it sounds absurd and pitch it again? Can't hurt! Let me know if it works. You're my inspiration to continue pitching ideas after multiple rejections, Jenny ;-).

OK, what's wrong with me? I don't want to live to 100. That's so old! I dread the thought of not being able to hear well or get around on my own. What would I do all day?

That darn Oprah - can't she do anything like us normal folk?
I guess if you have all that money, you want to be around long enough to spend it all . . .

Robin,
I could totally see you as a 103 old lady hiking up that mountain by your house . . . with one of those walkers with tennis ball feet!

Keep pitching. You're doing great.
Do you know Media Bistro and their articles on "how to pitch" various publications? If not, check them out at mediabistro.com. They're very well done and helpful. You can subscribe to their daily media newsletter, too. Great way to keep tabs on what's happening in the world of media, including publishing.
My best to you.

As they say in the marketing world "there are no new ideas...only old ideas turned into better ideas!"
think about fashion...it is never new! Only old recycled trends made better. Don't give up on the idea...but change it and make it better! :)
p.s. my great grandmother lived to 109! I don't want to live that long!

HAHA...I love (and miss) your humor.

Oh, and to answer your Mom's quiz....'doing'. Bring on 100 as long as I'm 'doing'.
